Lufthansa is Germany's flag carrier airline and, combined with its subsidiaries, is one of the leading aviation groups in the world. The Lufthansa Group comprises four business segments: passenger airlines, logistics, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), and catering. Rebound in financial accounts
Lufthansa's operating performance had been increasing considerably for over a decade when the coronavirus pandemic started in 2020 and the company's operations took a hit. In 2020, the number of passengers transported by the Lufthansa Group fell by 74.9 percent compared to the previous year, and in 2021, performance remained low, with only 46.9 million passengers. To mitigate the decline in financial accounts, Lufthansa implemented a reduction of approximately 22,000 employees. The company also received a bailout package worth nine billion euros from the German government in order to avoid the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic.In 2021, the Lufthansa Group operations started to recover from the initial shock of the pandemic. Nonetheless, the company's remained below pre-pandemic levels due to the emergence of novel challenges in the airline industry, including staff shortages and strikes among airport personnel and pilots. s of 2023, Lufthansa AG’s revenue amounted to 35.4 billion euros which was approximately only one billion euros less than the 2019 level. Moreover, the revenue in passenger airline segments also reached a new peak of 28.3 billion euros. In that year, the company made nearly 1.7 billion euros in net profit, which was much higher than it had been during the coronavirus pandemic.
Road to Zero emission
Lufthansa AG aims for continuous transformation and modernization of its fleet and operations to align with the dynamic geopolitical climate. To achieve its goal of sustaining aviation, the organization continuously invests in eco-friendly aircraft and puts forward initiatives to enhance their environmental impact. As of 2023, Lufthansa emitted 88 grams of carbon dioxide per passenger kilometers. This was the smallest emission registered since 2018.Although there is still a long way to go for zero emission, Lufthansa is planning to become one of the leading aviation companies in zero emission by 2050.
